Outside the SQuare is one of my bands based in the Northern Rivers NSW, and is also the longest running project of mine, beginning in 2003 at high school with some friends. The original drummer and one of my best mates, Colin, is still in the band to this very day!
While dabbling in the occasional original tune, this has primarily been an outlet for playing an ever-expanding range of covers that we enjoy.
You can find us performing regularly around the Northern Rivers.
How did it all begin?
We started our first band in high school in 2003 as part of our school music class. Then called Minor Details, we were naturally influenced by 90s grunge and alt rock like Grinspoon, The Living End and Powderfinger.
At that stage, we dreamed big, we wanted to play covers in the local pubs. However it was not to be, as Minor Details only ever performed at school-organised music nights and school assemblies before the inevitable outbound flight and shifting of priorities after graduation.
After a few years we got the band back together for a one-off gig, which we enjoyed so much that we decided to keep it going.
As there had been changes in the line-up and set list, we wanted a new name. Something different, something out of left field, something outside the square.
I wish there was a better story than that behind the name.
Since 2010 we’ve been playing regularly, and have expanded our sound and influences to include less grunge, and more blues, funk and classics, but still with a solid rock foundation. To this day we continue to have a lot of fun playing a lot of great tunes together.
